Contralateral Lateral Femoral Condyle Allografts Provide an Acceptable Surface Match for OCD Lesions

Objective: To determine if contralateral grafts could be used for OCD lesions up to 20mm. Using Nano-CT scans, Dr. Grant compared the surface of a recipient medial condyle with the surfaces after transplanting both a medial and lateral size matched dowel. Slide 3 in the attached document gives a good overview of his testing methods.

Overall:

  • There were no differences in cartilage step-off height or surface height between medial and lateral grafts
  • Suggests lateral allografts can be as effective in replicating the native contour as medial grafts
  • This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge that using a lateral femoral condyle is an acceptable option.
