Osteochondral Autograft and Allograft for Knee Cartilage Injuries – An International Delphi Consensus Statement

Purpose: To establish a consensus statement on osteochondral allografts (OCA) in the setting of cartilage defects in the knee.

Summary:

  • Seventy-nine leading surgeons across seventeen countries were asked 27 questions, with consensus defined as 80–89% agreement and strong consensus defined as 90–99% agreement.
  • There was a strong consensus that the optimal and acceptable time frame for OCA use was less than 4 weeks.
  • Based on consensus, the optimal drill depth was found to be 6–8 mm for OCA.
  • In total, 11 statements around OATS and OCA achieved strong consensus, and 7 achieved consensus.

JRF Ortho Take Away: OCAs are a valuable tool in managing cartilage defects of the knee. Thought leaders from across the world agree that the optimal timeframe for OCA use is 28 days. Further valuable information on technique, indications, and contraindications for OCA use can be found within the manuscript.
