Osteochondral Allograft Chondrocyte Viability Is Affected During Harvest by Irrigation Temperature and Reamer Speed

Purpose: To assess how different drilling speeds and irrigation temperatures impact chondrocyte viability during osteochondral allograft harvest. 

Summary:

  • To understand the effect of drilling, reaming, and irrigation temperature on chondrocyte viability during OCA allograft plug harvest. 
  • Reaming and drilling with cold saline (5°C) maintained chondrocyte viability and protected against heat induced death associated with OCA harvest, irrespective of drill speed.
