Failures of Realignment Osteotomy

Summary: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a disabling condition in young active patients. Although the etiology of knee OA is multifactorial, increased mechanical load as a result of limb malalignment has been clearly identified as a risk factor for the occurrence and progression of disease. 

This current concept article reviews the etiology, diagnosis, and management strategies for various complications related to high tibial and distal femoral osteotomies. In addition, technical strategies are provided for how to recognize and revise failed osteotomies in the setting of delayed unions and nonunions.
