Medial femoral condyle width and osteochondritis dissecans: cause or effect and the implications for osteochondral allograft transplantation

Purpose: This study discusses the sizing of MFCs in patients with OCD. It was found, when controlling for age and sex, OCD patients had uniformly wider MFCs than controls. Also, it finds evidence that a wider MFC might be causal in the development of OCD.

Allograft implications: The average MFCW of patients with OCD are greater than the average MFCW of allograft donors. The average study patient MFCW was 29.3 mm while average donor MFCW was 25.6 mm ± 2.5 mm1. To account for this variation, large LFC grafts are considered suitable graft options for patients with OCD in the MFC.
