Comparison of Patient-Reported Outcomes for Immediate Unrestricted Weightbearing Versus Restricted Rehabilitation Protocols After Osteochondral Allograft Transplantation to the Distal Femur

Purpose: Currently, no standardized rehabilitation protocol exists for patients following OCA surgery. Most commonly, restrictive postoperative weightbearing protocols are employed. This study assessed the outcomes of immediate weightbearing as tolerated (WBAT) compared to toe-touch weightbearing (TTWB) following OCA transplantation of the distal femur.

Summary:

  • At a 2 year follow up, both cohorts improved in all patients reported outcomes
  • No significant differences were observed between WBAT and TTWB.

JRF Ortho Take Away: Postoperative unrestricted weightbearing as tolerated yielded similar outcomes to toe-touch weightbearing. These findings suggest that after OCA transplantation, unrestricted weightbearing could provide patients with more flexibility and convenience during their rehabilitation process.
